The Renault 21 – short R21 – is a car of the manufacturer Renault. The R21 was built from spring 1986 to the end of 1994 and is a mid-range car. The R21 is available in three different body versions: notchback, hatchback and station wagon. The station wagon version was launched in October 1986 under the name “Nevada”. In addition to the facelift of the series, a hatchback variant was released in September 1989. In September 1989, the R21 received a facelift which, in addition to a modernized and rounded appearance, also included various additional equipment variants. For the revised version of the R21 there was an optional ABS system, air conditioning and automatic climate control.
The Renault 21 has a remarkable body structure. The car weighs only approx. 1050 kg and nevertheless reached the then US crash standards in 1987. The Renault 21 was sold by Chrysler in the United States as the Eagle Medallion. In the body there are reinforcements made of light metal alloys, the engine block rests on the large axle support, which reinforces the crash structure as a subframe. The lateral stability is achieved by two cross members in the floor of the car. The similarly constructed Renault 19 (weight approx. 930 kg) achieved top marks in crash comparisons at the beginning of the 1990s, also in comparison to VW Golf and Opel Astra.
In addition, the R21 was built in a large number of body variants, since there had to be two wheelbases to accommodate the different engine variants (longitudinally or transversely installed engine). The longitudinally installed engine requires a shorter wheelbase, visible on the front fender. The wheel is closer to the front door than with transverse engine variants. Some models were offered with all-wheel drive.
